Rallying for Refugees

A Day of Pickleball, Purpose, and Community

This past weekend, under the bright Newport sun and perfect coastal breeze, our community came together for a day that was about so much more than pickleball. We welcomed 58 players and around 75 total attendees from all across Southern California to rally together in support of refugees rebuilding their lives. 

The courts were alive with energy and laughter where players of all skill levels came together for some friendly competition. Others gathered on the deck to cheer, connect, and celebrate the work of Home for Refugees. The highlight for many beginners was our pickleball clinic, led by a pro who brought fresh energy and tips to the game (even I walked away with some new tricks!). 

The heart of the day came through the story of the Shevchenko family, a courageous Ukrainian family, who risked everything to protect their loved ones - leaving behind the familiar to find safety and hope. Thanks to Home for Refugees, they’ve been able to readjust to life in the U.S. and begin building a new future filled with stability and opportunity. Their resilience and joy were an inspiring testament to the impact community can have in changing a family’s life.  

Together, this event wasn’t just about sport - it was about community coming together to create lasting change. We are thrilled to share that we’ve raised [insert current total] toward our $15,000 fundraising goal.
